Holden Monaro GTS 327

  • Year1968
  • Engine327ci (5.4L) Chevrolet V8
  • InductionTwin 4-barrel carbs
  • Factory outputApprox. 250 hp

The top of the Monaro range when it launched in 1968, pairing a Chevrolet V8 with an Australian-built coupe. It won Bathurst in its debut year and became a symbol of Aussie motoring.

Our car

This 327 is a beast. Twin 4-barrel carburettors on a hi-rise manifold make enough power to spin the wheels in every gear. You’d want a special licence to even consider driving it.

Holden · HT Series

Holden Monaro HT GTS 350

  • Engine350ci (5.7L) V8
  • Built forBathurst homologation
  • MotorBlueprinted
  • StatusRebuilt to original spec

Holden’s answer to Ford’s GT Falcons. The HT GTS 350 was built to win at Bathurst, and it did exactly that in 1969.

Our car

One of the 680 built so the model could race at Bathurst. The wheel arches were flared early in its life, and it’s since been painstakingly rebuilt to original spec with a blueprinted motor. Apart from some work on the front seats, the interior is as original as possible.

Survivor

  • Engine186S (3.0L) inline six
  • Gearbox4-speed manual
  • Odometer36,668 original miles
  • Factory optionHolden air conditioning

Proof you didn’t need a V8 for a proper sports coupe. The six-cylinder GTS paired the hotter 186S engine with GTS badging, stripes and a luxurious interior.

Our car

Driven by its original owner and his wife, then lent by their son to a pair of country nuns, who drove it until around 1981. When someone noticed the registration had expired in 1979, it was parked in a hay shed in St George, Western Queensland. The current owner bought it in 2010, fitted electronic rust protection and kept it in a Cocoon airflow storage system until now.

  • HubcapsOriginal
  • ConditionFactory survivor

Holden pitched the LS as the luxury Monaro. With only 337 made, it’s close to the rarest regular production car ever built in Australia.

Our car

This unicorn is factory throughout, still wearing its original paint and hubcaps. It’s about as close as you’ll get to how it rolled off the production line.

Holden Monaro HQ

By the HX series the Monaro name lived on as a four-door GTS sedan, the last of the original Monaro line. Bold lines, unique badging and a V8 note made it a favourite with enthusiasts, and it’s highly sought after today.

A tribute to the black pursuit special from the original 1979 Mad Max, the Aussie blockbuster that helped shape a generation and launched Mel Gibson to international stardom.

Our car

Built by Kevin Bartlett race car builder Ron Eagle, with advice from Mad Max expert George Critty. Flick the switch on the gear stick and the compressor drives the blower pulley. The supercharger, body kit and modified Sunraysia wheels came from a WA Mad Max specialist, and the working side pipes cackle away right behind the cockpit.

Our car

To our knowledge it’s the only one built with its unique combination of options, and one of just 12 surviving Continentals in Australia. Ford Australia build data: 5,350 total build, 2,844 with this engine, 1,510 with this transmission, 184 in this paint, 96 with this trim, 4 with these options, and 1 with the Continental vinyl roof.
